These are my personal top 76 singles of those that peaked on the Billboard charts in 1976. The list is solely my opinion. Using Joel Whitburn's book, Pop Annual 1955-1999, I started with
the 527 singles that charted on Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 chart in
1976. An initial pass through
that list narrowed it down to about 140 tunes. The list was then
narrowed to 95, then listening,
ranking, and editing began. The top 76 are presented here, in order.
Mark, three of your top 10 were also in mine, and we matched exactly on our number 2 picks!!!
ReplyDeleteBanner list there, Kid™... I particularly like your #10 and #8 selections! :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like I'm late to the party but traffic on the Ten was a mess.
ReplyDeleteNow that Mark has taken the wrapper off his Top 10, I can fold SeƱor Dirk's picks into the mix. (He was so moved by our undertaking that he offered up his own Top 12 off the top off his head on the Twitter #DirkysDozen.)
There are six songs that appear on each of our four lists:
A Fifth Of Beethoven
Moonlight Feels Right
The Boys Are Back In Town
Welcome Back
You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine
Our individual rankings of each of those songs was a wide spread and there were no unanimous agreements anywhere to be found. Four guys, four lists, 263 songs. Full rankings coming soon - hoping SRK drops a list of honorable mentions.
You asked for honorable mentions, you got 'em. We aim to please. In no particular order (accuracy not guaranteed):
DeleteDisco Lady - Johnnie Taylor
Disco Duck - Rick Dees
Convoy - CW McCall
I Love Music - O'Jays
Rock and Roll Music - Beach Boys
You are the Woman - Firefall
Nights Are Forever Without You - England Dan & John Ford Coley
That'll Be the Day - Linda Ronstadt
With Your Love - Jefferson Starship
Baby I Love Your Way - Peter Frampton
There's a Kind of Hush - Carpenters
Over My Head - Fleetwood Mac
Shout It Out Loud - KISS
It's Over - Boz Scaggs
What Can I Say - Boz Scaggs
Fool for the City - Foghat
Harvest for the World - Isley Bros
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - The Beatles
Just to Be Close to You - Commodores
1976 is the year I discovered the radio. So many great songs made it hard to rank them!
ReplyDeleteThis is my top ten:
1. Don't Go Breaking My Heart
2. Silly Love Songs
3. Rhiannon
4. More Than A Feeling
5. December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)
6. Play That Funky Music
7. She's Gone
8. Love Is Alive
9. You're My Best Friend
10. I'd Really Love To See You Tonight
