MFD Random Five #18

In which I click the shuffle icon on the iTunes app and listen to the first five songs that pop up from the years 1976-85.

1. "King George Street" by Squeeze (1985, A&M)
   I don't think this is one of the group's better songs, yet I know every word. I think the whole Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti album sounds more like XTC than Squeeze, but I'll go ahead and stick this CD in my truck today because its been a while since I've heard it. I'm guessing I haven't heard the whole thing since December 14, 2011.


2. "Nag Nag Nag" by Cabaret Voltaire (1978, Rough Trade)
   There's not much to like about this song (especially the droning feedback), but I guess that's the point of a song titled "Nag Nag Nag," right?  Nonetheless, I can't help but love the whole DIY ethos.


3. "Dead Fish (Don't Swim Home)" by New Musik (1980, GTO)
   Just ignore that title. After an intro that's about a minute too long, the chorus of this thing is catchy as hell. I was completely unaware of New Musik until a few years ago, but this synthpop group would have been squarely in my wheelhouse in the early eighties.


4. "Right Back Where We Started From" by Maxine Nightingale (1976, United Artists)
   Motown-meets-disco-meets-ELO. And it works. Best baritone saxophone line on a disco record?


5. "Absolute" by Scritti Politti (1985, Warner Bros.)
   I placed Cupid & Psyche 85 atop my list of the Top 25 albums of 1985.  'Nuff said.
