Bracketology: Movie Soundtracks, Champion

Last week, I presented a bracket of 32 movie soundtracks selected from the years 1976-85. Click here for that post and a printable bracket.  Today, we crown the champion movie soundtrack:

Not surprisingly, our overall #1 seed takes home the coveted prize.  And deservedly so:

  • #57 on VH1's 2003 list of greatest albums of all time.
  • #131 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of 500 greatest albums of all time.
  • Grammy Award for Album of the Year (1979)
  • Added to the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress on March 21, 2013 for long-term preservation
  • 2004 Grammy Hall of Fame inductee

Peak on the US Billboard Top 200 chart: #1 (24 consecutive weeks, January 21 - July 1, 1978)
Peak on Billboard's R&B albums chart: #1 (5 consecutive weeks, February 18 - March 18, 1978)
Peak on Cash Box album chart: #1 (25 consecutive weeks, January 21 - July 8, 1978)

Billboard, November 12, 1977

  1. Well deserved win. Even if Purple Rain had triumphed on the Ebert side, I would have gone to Saturday Night Fever for the win.
