I hope you enjoyed my Top 78 of '78 series. As I mentioned in each post, I started with the 451 singles that peaked on Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 chart in 1978. An initial pass through that list narrowed it down to 117 before deciding on the final 78. But what of those other 39 singles that made the first cut but weren't selected for the final list? Here they are, in alphabetical order:
- "Alive Again" by Chicago
- "An Everlasting Love" by Andy Gibb
- "Beast of Burden" by The Rolling Stones
- "Boogie Shoes" by K.C. & The Sunshine Band
- "Come Sail Away" by Styx
- "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by Santa Esmeralda
- "Don't Look Back" by Boston
- "Ebony Eyes" by Bob Welch
- "Even Now" by Barry Manilow
- "Every Kinda People" by Robert Palmer
- "Flash Light" by Parliament
- "Get Off" by Foxy
- "Heartless" by Heart
- "Here You Come Again" by Dolly Parton
- "I Love the Nightlife (Disco 'Round)" by Alicia Bridges
- "I Love You" by Donna Summer
- "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight" by Atlanta Rhythm Section
- "Kiss You All Over" by Exile
- "Macho Man" by Village People
- "Miss You" by The Rolling Stones
- "On Broadway" by George Benson
- "Our Love" by Natalie Cole
- "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" by Linda Ronstadt
- "Psycho Killer" by Talking Heads
- "Sentimental Lady" by Bob Welch
- "Shame" by Evelyn "Champagne" King
- "Short People" by Randy Newman
- "Slip Slidin' Away" by Paul Simon
- "Summer Nights" by John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John
- "Thank God It's Friday" by Love & Kisses
- "Thank You For Being a Friend" by Andrew Gold
- "Too Hot Ta Trot" by Commodores
- "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" by Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams
- "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon
- "Who Are You" by The Who
- "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" by Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond
- "You Needed Me" by Anne Murray
- "You Never Done It Like That" by Captain & Tennille
- "You're the One That I Want" by John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John
Any of those singles could have easily made the 78 of '78 on another day. 1978 had lots of good tunes - what a wonderful problem to have!
