Once I finished putting together similar lists for The Top Billboard Top 40 Artists of 1976 - 1985 and The Top Billboard Adult Contemporary Artists of 1976 - 1985, I grabbed another charts book off the shelf (pictured above) and got to work on an R&B list.
The following acts had at least fourteen R&B Top 40 singles during the years 1976-85. Which one had the most R&B Top 40 hits during that time?
| Ashford & Simpson | The Bar-Kays |
| George Benson | Peabo Bryson |
| Cameo | Natalie Cole |
| The Commodores | Con Funk Shun |
| Earth, Wind & Fire | Aretha Franklin |
| The Gap Band | The Isley Brothers |
| Rick James | Evelyn "Champagne" King |
| Gladys Knight | Kool & The Gang |
| The Manhattans | Maze feat. Frankie Beverly |
| Melba Moore | The O'Jays |
| Ray Parker, Jr/Raydio | Parliament/Funkadelic |
| Teddy Pendergrass | Pointer Sisters |
| Prince | Smokey Robinson |
| Diana Ross | Rufus |
| Shalamar | The Spinners |
| Donna Summer | Luther Vandross |
| The Whispers | Deniece Williams |
| Stevie Wonder |

I do love me some R&B but this is one chart I know very little about. Looking forward to the next two posts.
